Power 2 Assistive Tech has been developed by Alysia Martindale.
Since April 2022, I have served as the Lead Assistive Technologist at Ambitious College, where I spearheaded initiatives to integrate technology into teaching practices to facilitate access to the curriculum for diverse learners. During my time at Ambitious College I have also worked closely with Speech and Language Therapy providing specialist electronic AAC support including working with teachers, learners, NHS hubs. Please see video showing the impact of assistive technology project has had on young people with Autism.
I have also previously been an Asssistive technologist at Norwood leading Jewish Charity supporting people with learning disabilities and Autism, and their families, which equipped me with the skills to collaborate effectively with Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists to enhance learners’ communication and independent living skills. Throughout both of these roles I have successfully secured NHS and charity funded communication devices for individuals with complex communication needs.
My dedication to supporting individuals with specific needs is further demonstrated through my role as a regional communication champion for Rett UK from June 2021 to June 2022. During this time, I developed resources and provided support to individuals with Rett Syndrome and their families, showcasing my commitment to fostering community engagement and interaction among participants.
In my position at Norwood, I focused on enhancing the independence of adults with learning disabilities through environmental control and communication strategies. By working closely with service users, their families, and interdisciplinary professionals such as Speech & Language therapists, I strived to create tailored solutions that maximised their quality of life. Please see “The Extraordinary Lives of Stephanie and Joe” – a video showing how my work with assistive technology has impacted Stephanie and Joe
Moreover, my pursuit of continuous professional development led me to complete a Level 7 Postgraduate Certificate in Assistive Technology, followed by a funded Masters by Research project focusing on development of a training program (AAC IS MY VOICE) for communication partners in electronic AAC. This project, completed in January 2023, honed my expertise in supporting individuals with complex communication needs.
Since completing my Masters by Research, I’ve taken a leap into the world of assistive technology by creating “Power 2 Assistive Tech.” This initiative is all about providing specialist sessions that cater to individuals needing support through technology. It’s been an exciting journey, blending my academic knowledge with practical applications to empower users. My aim is to demystify assistive tech and make it accessible to everyone, whether they’re students, professionals, or simply looking for ways to enhance their daily lives. The feedback has been fantastic, and it’s rewarding to see the positive impact of tailored tech solutions in action!
